What does University of Miami Digital Skills Bootcamp do?

University of Miami Digital Skills Bootcamp is a new online learning program created in collaboration with HackerU. They offer online courses to launch a new career in digital marketing, UX design, or cybersecurity.

Both the digital marketing and UX/UI design courses are self-paced and last about 400 hours each. However, before starting the full program students have to pass an introductory course that lasts about 20-30 hours. All students participate in instructor-led lectures, assignments, and projects that can be added to student’s professional portfolios. Instructors also host Q&A sessions where students can get personalized feedback.

Their digital marketing course teaches students the skills they need to become a digital marketer, covering inbound marketing, outbound marketing, and even marketing-related skills. Students learn search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), e-commerce, PPC advertising, content writing, and social media marketing. The curriculum also covers the basics of UX/UI design, data visualization, data analysis, and even web development to give marketers a well-rounded skill set and an understanding of the whole picture when working on a campaign. Plus, students work with in-demand marketing tools like Facebook, Google Ads, and WordPress throughout the program. The course takes on an agency model that mimics a real work environment. As part of this experience, students form their own digital marketing agencies and execute client briefs as part of this project.

While the marketing course touches on UX design, students who want to become a UX designer can enroll in the full UX/UI design course instead. The curriculum is project-based, full of real-world design challenges that students can add to their portfolios. Students work hands-on with Adobe Creative Suite to create digital designs, master Miro to synthesize research, and learn Figma to make high-fidelity mockups. The curriculum even touches on basic front-end web development as students design websites with HTML and CSS.

All students participate in career services. Coaches and experts meet 1-on-1 with students to optimize their LinkedIn profiles, portfolios, and resumes for the job search. In the final 10 hours of the program, students also participate in career coaching sessions, professional networking workshops, interview training, and even some networking events.

Who is University of Miami Digital Skills Bootcamp for?

People who want to launch a new career in digital marketing or UX design could benefit from University of Miami’s bootcamp. The comprehensive marketing curriculum could be a good match for students who want to develop a well-rounded skill set that includes content writing, UX/UI design, and even data analytics. People who want to work in Miami might be a good fit as the curriculum is tailored to the local market and the university name may stand out. The program is totally remote and flexible, making it a good choice for learners with a full-time job or other full-time commitments.

What does University of Miami Digital Skills Bootcamp cost?

Tuition for any full 400-hour program is $14,000. The 20-30 hour introductory courses cost $500 each and are included in this price. While the introductory course is mandatory, students don’t have to move on to the full course if the intro course doesn’t wow them.

To apply, candidates fill out a form and then speak to an admissions advisor. While the program does not require a formal interview or test for admission, students have to pass a test to move from the introductory course to the full course. University of Miami Digital Skills Bootcamp admits applicants on a rolling basis and no tech experience is necessary.

Ratings and reviews

As a relatively new program, University of Miami Digital Skills Bootcamp does not have too many online reviews. However, what exists is mostly positive. They hold a 4.7/5 star rating on Course Report based on only 3 reviews. One grad loved that the course was accessible to beginners. He especially appreciated that the staff were “super helpful and continued to support me throughout the entire program.”

While another grad was impressed that their comprehensive curriculum covered a “broad range of topics”, they warned that “some things that were promised were not delivered” and that “no virtual labs were offered even though they said they would be.” This student also felt the instructor team “did not go into detail” on some important tech topics. However, another student raved about the practical curriculum, appreciating that students participated in “real world tasks.” Other Redditors were also impressed with the parent company behind the bootcamp, HackerU. On the whole, grads seemed satisfied with the practical, comprehensive curriculum with lots of support, though some students may have preferred more time to cover some more challenging topics in-depth with more labs and detailed explanations.
